FOLLOW THE DRINKING GOURD is a feature documentary about the Black food justice movement. This 60-minute film connects the legacy of slavery, land loss, and climate change to our fight for food security.


Shirah Dedman is an African-American afroecologist that specializes in the environmental analysis of the African-American experience. Shirah is obssessed with food justice. She obtained a Permaculture Design Certificate from Earth Activist Training, and a master of laws in Agricultural & Food Law from the University of Arkansas Law School.

OPIRG Peterborough works to create and sustain student and community-based engagement through research, education and action on social justice and environmental issues. We work to challenge oppression in all its forms and use consensus-based decision-making in a non-hierarchical and accessible setting. In addition to supporting community-based research projects, we partner with local organizations and groups to host events, workshops, and campaigns dedicated to social change, including our annual DisOrientation Week. OPIRG Peterborough provides student employment, volunteer, and placement opportunities, consensus and anti-oppression trainings, and community sponsorships for local projects and campaigns.
